Work
International
Students and Work
As part of their studies students will have opportunities
to interact with world of work. These work opportunity enables
the students to put into practice what they have learnt.
Please note that holders of South African study visas may
not engage in full time employment they are permitted to
work part-time for no more than 20 hours per week.
Prior to leaving to your home country, students must obtain
a study permit (endorsed with a practical training permit)
from the nearest South African High Commission, Embassy,
Consulate or Trade Commission. Other work opportunities
are available within universities, outside university (for
practical purposes) for students to experience. In these
instances students will get benefits of work experience
and relaxation from the studies and in some cases financial
rewards. The students get the opportunity to interact with
people at work, community and take responsibility.
Volunteer and internship work though limited are available
for students studying in South African institutions. These
opportunities may or may not be paid employment. In order
to get opportunity to make a difference, experience the
South African world of work and interact with South Africans,
volunteer work, work shadowing opportunities in industry,
hospitals, orphanages and other community-based organization
will be a place to start.

Looking for off-campus housing and accommodation can be
very stressful for an international student. SAES will take
away the stress by assisting the student to get the best,
affordable and convenient accommodation. SAES will:
- Arrange
fully furnished (or unfurnished) housing in line with
student's needs.
- Facilitate
home stays with South African families for cross-cultural
purposes.
- Assist
in reserving university accommodation where possible.
SAES
housing is found at a number of Cape Town locations that
make it easy for students to access the excitement and charm
of life in Cape Town's major suburbs and they are close
to shopping malls, universities, colleges, rail/road communication
services, facilities, and other important social facilities.
In other parts of South Africa, SAES will assist in accessing
the best, affordable and convenient accommodation suited
for students.
SAES aims to inform and educate students about housing options
and tenancy rights and responsibilities.
SAES strongly advises all students against signing lease
agreements prior to arrival in South Africa. Students are
advised to first physically inspect rental properties before
signing lease agreements. SAES assist students avoid problems
related to accommodation and will look for accommodation
on behalf of the student. Students are advised to educate

Visas
Studying
in SA: study permits
International student considering enrolling at a South African
educational institution are per South African immigration
laws required to apply for a study permit. SAES will provide
information on study permit requirements and application
procedures, and the answers to some frequently asked questions.
Where can I make inquiries about
study permits?
Inquiries relating to study permits may be obtained from
either the nearest South African mission in your own country
or contacting directly the Department of Home Affairs, Private

Apply Study Permit before leaving
for SA
Students are strongly advice to obtain study permit at their
home countries before leaving for South Africa. Please note
that you cannot enter South Africa on a visitor's visa hoping
to apply for a study permit here.
Application for a study permit
Before making an application for a study permit, a student
must first receive a formal offer of acceptance from a South
African educational institution. Study permit application
form is obtainable from the nearest South African mission
at student's country. Complete the form and return the form
to the same office. Study permit application must be accompanied
by the following documentations:
- A
valid passport.
- A
letter formally offering you a place of study at the relevant
institution.
- Proof
that you are financially able to pay your tuition fees
and have adequate means of support.
- A
medical certificate and proof medical insurance cover
usable in South Africa.
- A
repatriation guarantee. Unless a South African sponsoring
body, citizen or permanent resident provides a written
undertaking as specified in the application form, you
will be required to lodge a cash deposit or bank guarantee
equivalent to the costs of transportation to your home
country in case you fail to comply with your permit conditions.
However, if your course is not longer than a year, or
you will be attending a religious institution, you will
be exempt from this requirement, and need only possess
a valid return/onward ticket.
- A
written undertaking that you will return to your country
of residence/origin after completing your studies.
- The
relevant permit fee. Refer to Home Affairs link: http://www.home-affairs.gov.za/
Study
permits are granted for periods of a year at a time only,
and for specific fields of study. You should therefore renew
your permit annually at your nearest Home Affairs Office
in South Africa. Note that if you change the course or institution,
you will be required to apply for a new study permit.
If a student on a valid study permit leave South Africa
temporarily, always check with your Home Affairs Office
if you have multiple entries visa before leaving the country.
